Islay Mist

Amontillado Napoleon Cask Finish 8 Year Old

This special edition of Islay Mist has yielded only 7000 bottles. It is created in close collaboration with Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana of Spain, whose vineyard are at the highest altitude of the entire Jerez (sherry) district. While the vineyard is not lying immediately next to the sea, the altitude allows for the cool Atlantic sea breeze to reach the grapes and after harvest the wine that becomes Amontillado is then matured by the sea in Sanlucar. This creates a hint of saltiness which fits perfectly with the peaty Islay Mist.

This Islay Mist is a blend of whiskies that have matured for a minimum of eight years. In the blend is gentle Lowland grain, rich Highland malt and peaty(smoky) Islay malt whisky from the Laphroaig Distillery. After blending the whisky is rested and spends a further six months in Amontillado casks finalising the unique character. The casks used are intensely flavoured solera butts infused for many years with premium Amontillado Napoleon.

The ‘Napoleon’ part of the name? That dates back to the days of Napoleon, when Bodega Hidalgo made sherry for the French soldiers. The name Napoleon was added to catch their interest and it has stuck ever since.

Tasting Note:

“The water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to add whisky. By diligent effort, I learned to like it”
